   Nuclear Power Integrates Document Management

Government laws and oversight have made the nuclear power industry one of the most highly regulated in the world. To ensure public health and safety, thousands of regulations and procedures must be handled almost as carefully as the fuel used to generate nuclear power.

But creating, updating, and maintaining these procedures and providing employees with instant access to them is a monumental task. Power-producing facilities are finding that Portable Document Format (PDF) solutions have streamlined their document management processes.

Managing Economies of Scale: Averaging 1,000-plus employees and 1,000-plus procedures, a nuclear power plant can create more thousands of new work documents to provide detailed descriptions of maintenance tasks at a given plant. Acrobat-based solutions become indispensable in the ability to more efficiently create, maintain, distribute, and store procedural documents.

The process of creating even the simplest work orders can require input by five or more people. Complicated tasks may involve input from over 100 employees. To streamline the review cycle for work documents, procedures, forms, and other controlled items, take advantage of the review and markup capabilities of Acrobat 4.0, as well as the ability to sort and print each employee's comments.

Automating the Forms Process: In addition to procedures and work orders, virtually every aspect of plant operations requires the use of a form. As a result, employees can spend considerable time locating the latest version of a paper form, or printing the form out and filling it in.

With Image Data services, paper forms can easily be scanned and converted to PDF for electronic delivery on the intranet. Users can also fill out PDF forms online, a capability that saves paper and substantial time. Once a form is in PDF, it can be quickly and easily routed for approvals to any computer at the plant.

As more of the regulatory documentation at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission migrates to PDF, having an internal PDF-based document management solution will make it easier to exchange materials with them.

Incorporating an Image Data solution into your workflow will contribute to increased productivity and improved safety at the plant. Work documents and procedures can be located faster, and employees can quickly verify that they are using the latest version.
